Reflection

A leader’s unique perspective is an important source of creativity and competitive advantage. But the reality is that most of us live such fast-paced, frenzied lives that we fail to leave time to actually listen to ourselves.

This article by Nancy J. Adler in Harvard Business Review has so many valuable thoughts about the benefits of keeping a journal to develope your own unique leadership - whether that is leading a large company or showing up as a leader in your own life.

Have you made time recently to listen to yourself?

One suggestion she makes is to use art to inspire reflection.

“the unexpected juxtaposition between a painting and real-world challenges often exposes concealed dynamics and surprising new insights. …looking at art teaches the viewer — whether artist, physician, or CEO — to make sense of a richer palette of complexity. It helps us all to more accurately and creatively make sense of our world. At the same time, it instills the humility to realize that current interpretations are just one of many possible worldviews.”

What visuals do you have around you right now which could be a prompt for reflection? This has been one of the benefits of adding images to my journal. Sometimes all it takes is letting yourself look at something for a few minutes uninterupted:

  • What do you notice?
  • What part of the piece is calling you? Why?
  • What is it saying to you today?

Wishing you space for reflection and leadership that comes from your unique perspective,

Mary

April 2024 Breath of Grace Happy New Year! Oh wait, is it April? Hmmm Yeah…. I guess it’s been a year. In case you’re curious - the 2023 is because I use old calendars as journals. I like the weight of the paper, and somehow it seems easier to draw, cut, or paste all over a page that is already imperfect. So it turns out, this may be my first email of the year. You may not have noticed, but I missed you! I purposely scaled back quite a bit last year as I started on some particularly demanding...

December 2023 Inspiration from Kintsugi With a little down time during the holidays, my husband and I went to a class on Kintsugi. It has gotten a lot of attention recently - perhaps accelerated by the need to embrace imperfection when world events caused a shutdown. The mending of pottery with gold has such a beautiful attraction. Our Kintsugi plates after class at the Japanese American Friendship Garden Kintsugi is often shared with an attention on the beauty brought by the gold, but we...

October 22, 2023 So we did this… The new bed (and friend) under my desk. There are many, many reasons why we did not need a dog right now, but here we are. Buddy is a rescue dog. He’s spent the last 4+ months at a shelter with other dogs, goats, even a few pigs. A single dirt road leading up to it with the occasional slow-moving car and a handful of people he saw on a very strict schedule. Before that, not a lot is known about his life besides shelters, streets, and a puppy injury. Now he’s...
